Frequently Asked Questions

If your question isn't answered here, please get in touch using the enquiry form.
What happens during an initial psychiatric consultation?

Dr. Chandrappa will ask about your current concerns and symptoms, your mental and physical health history, any previous treatment and medication, and your personal circumstances and goals. At the end, he will share his initial impressions and discuss possible next steps. You are welcome to ask questions throughout.

How long is a consultation?

Appointment lengths vary depending on the type of consultation. Initial assessments are longer than follow-up appointments. The practice will confirm the length of your appointment when it responds to your enquiry.

What conditions can you assess?

Dr. Chandrappa is a general adult psychiatrist with additional specialist training in addiction psychiatry. Clinical interests include mood and anxiety disorders, OCD, adult ADHD, autism-related mental-health needs, addiction, psychosis, personality disorders, neuropsychiatry and neuromodulation. If you are unsure whether your concern is appropriate, please describe it in your enquiry.

Do you assess adult ADHD?

Yes, adult ADHD is one of Dr. Chandrappa's clinical interests. An assessment explores current and childhood difficulties and considers other possible explanations. An assessment does not guarantee a diagnosis or a particular treatment.

Do you assess autism?

Dr. Chandrappa offers psychiatric assessment and support for adults with autism and associated mental-health needs. Please describe what you are looking for in your enquiry, and the practice will advise whether this service is appropriate for you.

Do you treat addiction?

Addiction psychiatry is a core area of Dr. Chandrappa's training and experience. Assessment and treatment planning can cover alcohol, drugs, behavioural addictions and co-occurring mental-health conditions. Some people may need additional services, such as supervised detoxification, which would be discussed with you.

Can medication be prescribed?

As a consultant psychiatrist, Dr. Chandrappa can prescribe medication where it is clinically appropriate following assessment. Whether medication is recommended depends on your individual circumstances, and alternatives will be discussed with you.

What is rTMS?

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood. It is most commonly considered for depression. It is not suitable for everyone, and suitability is decided after a full assessment.

What is ECT?

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is a treatment given under general anaesthetic in specialist settings, usually considered for severe depression or certain other serious conditions when other treatments have not worked or rapid treatment is needed. Benefits and risks, including effects on memory, are discussed in detail before any decision.

Are online consultations available?

You can indicate whether you would prefer an in-person or online appointment in the enquiry form. The practice will confirm which formats are available for your situation when it responds.
